Five Great Exotic Winter Getaways

For many people, vacations in the winter means escaping the snow for a warm winter destination.  But if your ready to travel to someplace that is different than the usual Florida beach or a Caribbean cruise; or want to travel to a destination of a lifetime, here is the list for you.  Each of these exotic destinations provide the perfect weather and the time of year for that trip on your bucket list that you have always wanted to take, and will provide memories you will always remember.

Go Hiking in a Rain Forest: Costa Rica

Costa Rica has it all--vibrant rain forest; diverse wildlife; clean, white-sand beaches (bordering both the Pacific and the Atlantic); and a laid-back local culture.  Fabulous all-inclusive Costa Rican beach resorts abound but travelers seeking real adventure can head to wilderness lodges deep in the rain forest, where electricity, Internet access and room service are practically extinct.  (I doubt you'll miss checking your e-mail while spotting toucans, sloths and squirrel monkeys as you relax on your porch.)  The winter months mark Costa Rica's dry season; this is the best time of the year to find stunning weather (and crystal-clear diving conditions) in the region.

Hit the Beach: Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is a must-visit African destination--especially during its summer season (winter in the Northern Hemisphere), which is prime time for sunning yourself on the city's many clean, white sand beaches.  One favorite is Bloubergstrand, where you can enjoy stunning views of Table Mountain, South Africa's most famous natural landmark.  Another strip of sand you won't want to miss: Boulders Beach, where you can rub shoulders with a colony of African penguins.

Go Diving or Snorkeling: Bonaire

This tiny island in the Southern Caribbean, measures just 112 square miles, is one of the world's best diving destinations.  The western side of the island is rimmed by colorful reefs swarming with parrot fish, sea turtles, butterfly fish, eagle rays and hundreds of other marine species.  More than 50 of Bonaire's 86 official dive sites can be accessed from the shore--keep your eye out for the yellow stones that mark that mark these sites.  Bonaire enjoys warm, sunny weather year round and is located south of the Caribbean's hurricane belt.

Indulge Yourself at the Spa: Cancun, Mexico

Mexico's sunny climate and and abundance of resorts of resorts in all price ranges make it a great place to treat yourself to a relaxed spa getaway.  For true decadence, many of the unique spa treatments draw on Mayan traditions, such as a detox herbal wrap incorporating local honey and healing herbs.

Explore Ancient Temples: Cambodia

The temperate, dry winter season is the best time to visit Cambodia (summertime tends to be oppressively hot, rainy and humid).  Visitors flock to the Angkor area to discover hundreds of ruined temples dating back to the Khmer empire of the 9th through 13th centuries.  Of course, the crown jewel is the five-towered Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious building.  To fully appreciate the rich details of the temple's bas-relief scenes and carvings, hire a knowledgeable local guide.

Travel Tips To Cancun

With many families starting to plan their winter and spring break holidays, one of the most popular destinations is the region surrounding the city of Cancun in Mexico.  Here are a few things everyone should know for their next vacation to this beautiful region.

Taxis
You can get a taxi from anywhere in Cancun, the cost is variable depending on the zone, fares to the hotel zone are the most expensive, and I suggest you arrange the price with the driver first. Local taxis are not allowed to transport passengers from the airport; they can take you over there for your departure only.  To go to your hotel from the airport you can use any transportation line located in the two terminals, but be aware of unauthorized persons working at the airport.  They are commonly called pirates and you could end up paying much more than the regular rate.  I suggest you pre-book your airport transportation service, it is more convenient, safe and easy.

Exchanging Money
All stores and restaurants will take US dollars and travelers checks.  Odds are however the exchange rate will be in their favor.  The best exchange rates can be found at a bank (the best option), exchange places (casa de cambio) or in the hotel (check the rate as some do not give you the best rate).  NO ONE rakes US coins, bills that are ripped, or damaged.

Other Stuff

- Don't drink the water even if the hotel has a purified water system, it tastes funny.  Mexican bottled water is 1/3 the price of the US.

- Set taxi fares before getting in.  If you have a problem, take his number off the taxi & report it to your it to your hotel.

- Most hotels are not  downtown.  Go explore.  Prices are better downtown.

- Don't let people change your mind about a restaurant.  Every restaurant pays a commission to concierges, taxis, bell boys, front desk clerks sharks, monkeys etc.  The commission could be as high as 15% of your bill and of course that fee is added to the menu price.

- Most people speak 'JOB English' meaning they get by when you ask them questions they answer daily.  Speak slowly & clearly.  Don't use uncommon words.  Don't expect everyone to understand your accent.

- Ocean temperature year round is 80F so jump in.

- If you where 2 hours from the pyramids in Egypt would you go?  If yes, go to Chichen-Itza.

- Ice is safe in drinks.

- Always carry change! 5, 10, 20 pesos.  Amazing how many stores don't have change and it will be your fault.

- Watch out for the hot salsa!  It's the next day that bites.  Well, bites...

- Best thing to do?  Get up at 6:30 am and walk on the beach.  THE BEST!

- If someone says 'I understand', they don't.  It is that simple.

- Tip your maid daily; a buck or 2.

- And finally; how to speak better Spanish?  Drink more tequila!

The Best Caribbean Resorts for Golfers

Last week, after finishing a round of golf at my local club, I went to the 19th hole to share an adult beverage with my golf buddies.  As I sat down, a Club member, who knew my wife and I were in the travel industry, asked if I could recommend several golf courses in the Dominican Republic that where challenging for his hard core golfing son in law to play on his upcoming trip to that nation.  After giving him the names of several famous courses, I started thinking about my own situation.  After the brutal winter of 2013, my wife wants to go someplace warm for our Holiday vacation, instead of our normal ski trip out west. One of the options we are looking at is vacationing at a luxury beach all inclusive in Cancun which offers free rounds of golf at a nearby golf course.  Now, I don't know the reputation of this particular golf course, or how well it is maintained; but any chance I can  get to play a round in the middle of winter, becomes an opportunity.  For that reason alone this  vacation option gets my vote, ( thou unfortunately not the only vote), for our family trip.

I started thinking about these two similar events happening at the same time; and it started me asking myself what are considered the best  all inclusive resorts and dedicated golf resorts in the Caribbean region for that golfer with the skill that wants to play the best, ( unfortunately above my skill level). Here is a consolidated list of the highest rated and most recommended golf resorts that offer the most beautiful, challenging, and value for the golfer who is planning to travel to the Caribbean region; from the pages of Caribbean Journal, Golf Digest and Travel and Leisure.  So if you are thinking about a vacation to one of these destinations, check out the list and don't leave your clubs at home.
