Best Vacation Ideas for a Multigenerational Vacation.

Multigenerational travel is becoming more and more popular, and it’s a trend I don’t see slowing down any time soon. Families are placing more importance on spending meaningful time together and making memories on vacations with activities that appeal to all ages.

Not every family vacation destination is ideal for guests on a multigenerational vacation.
Parents, grandparents, and children traveling together introduces a whole new dynamic to vacations. Choosing the perfect destination or type of trip is essential to its success.

We’ve put together a list of our favorite vacation destinations that are ideally suited to the needs of larger family groups.

Tanque Verde Guest Ranch – Tucson, AZ

A Dude Ranch vacation is sure to be one your family will be talking about for years to come. Tanque Verde is a unique destination that goes well beyond that of your typical hotel. With plenty of outdoor adventures like horseback riding (don’t’ worry, there are rides for all skill levels including true novices, and the staff is trained to work with grandma and grandpa to make them feel comfortable as well), hiking, mountain biking, yoga, swimming, basketball, tennis, and even a spa, there is something for everyone.  Families love the sense of camaraderie and shared, new experiences that make these vacations a bonding experience like no other.

The relaxed vibe at Tanque Verde will put everyone at ease right away. The ranch feels like a high-end summer camp for all ages. Kids age 4-12 can participate in supervised programming that includes riding lessons, hiking, arts and crafts, and nature activities. The whole family will enjoy dining options that include outdoor cookouts from blueberry pancakes griddled over an open fire to traditional barbecue in the evening. Prefer more traditional dining? The options at Tanque Verde are varied enough to appeal to all ages and definitely don’t disappoint. Also would Paws Up in Montana is wonderful option.

Fairmont Kea Lani – Maui, Hawaii

Who wouldn’t love escaping to the Hawaiian islands for some family fun? The Fairmont Kea Lani is the ideal option for larger family groups. It is one of Hawaii’s only oceanfront all-suite and villa resorts. Some condos offer direct access to the big lagoon pool, others are a short walk to the beach, and many boast private plunge pools on the patio (a definite hit with the kids!).

The resort offers plenty of activities to keep everyone happy including multiple swimming pools (there is an adult-only pool, a water play area for babies, and even two family pools connected by a 140-foot water slide). The Hawaiian Cultural Program is a favorite for extended families. Other activities include various water sports, snorkeling, scuba diving, kids clubs, wellness classes, an award-winning spa, and a fitness center. Golf and tennis are available nearby as well.

Cruising

Cruises offer great flexibility for multigenerational families. With (almost) everything included in one price, stateroom options for a variety of budgets, and an abundance of activities from sunrise till way beyond sunset, setting sail on the high seas is often the perfect vacation for everyone. Dining options are plentiful and cater to both the simple palate of the youngest member of your family and the desire for more elegant dining among the adults in the group.

Cruises offer the perfect balance of high energy fun and relaxation. Supervised kids clubs that you will often have to beg the kids to leave give parents some time to relax or enjoy the adult-only spaces and activities on board. Since everything is taken care of once you are onboard, cruising eliminates many of the frustrations of traveling with children.

Choosing the right ship will be important. Many of the newer, larger ships will have a massive list of available activities that Grandma and the little ones can all enjoy together.  This is where it gets tricky, as Grandma may have her favorite upper end cruise line. Depending on time of year and location they may not have a kid friendly activites or shows in the evening or have chicken nuggets.

Helping my clients match their vacation wishes and needs to the perfect ship and itinerary is one of my favorite parts of planning a cruise vacation, because I love putting my extensive cruise knowledge to the advantage of my clients.

Also remember cruising is more than just the Caribbean. Alaska is my #1 multigenerational cruise destination. Grandparents and the families with older kids may do the land portion pre or post cruise and the others who have younger children or who can only squeeze a week's vacation can join the others on the cruise portion.

Bermuda is a great choice for a non Caribbean beach choice, as it's easy for Midwestern families to drive to the East Coast ports. Want history, scenery and older cities without the long European flight? Summer Canada/New England sailings fit the bill as the demographics are younger in summer, due to the easy of getting to ports in Boston, New York and Quebec City.

Thinking Europe? There is no better way for a multigenerational group to cover a lot of ground than by ship, And don't forget the family itineraries on the European Rivers.

Much like cruising, all-inclusive resorts make planning large family vacation simple and easy. Everything is included for one price, and there are a wide variety of activities for guests of all ages.
Jewel Runaway Bay resort makes our list for its extensive list of activities and amenities tailor-made for families. You’ll find a kids club (for all ages), dedicated areas for teens including a recording studio, family laser tag and not only kids programming, but family programming as well. The kids are sure to enjoy the Jewel Lagoon Water Park complete with lazy river, family raft ride, zero-entry lagoon style pool, splash zone, and a giant sun deck.

Hyatt Ziva, Royalton, Azul, Moon Palace and Beaches are some other options.

Is a Disney Cruise Worth the Price?

For most families who look into planning a Disney Cruise vacation, there is an element of "sticker shock" when they initially hear the price… especially for travel during the busiest seasons. One of the questions I am asked most often is "are Disney Cruises really worth the cost?"

Short answer… for most families, YES.

It's true that Disney cruises come with premium pricing, but they live up to the premium expectations that come with the price tag. I could go on and on listing the reasons why Disney Cruise Line stands out in the family cruise marketplace, but here are the things that make them shine…

No better kids’ programs at sea!
I'm sure it will come as no surprise that Disney has placed a huge emphasis on their kids' programs. While other cruise lines have huge casinos in the middle of their ships, Disney has forgone the casino in favor of more space for kids’ clubs.

The kids' clubs are available each day, typically from 9 am until midnight, and you may find it challenging to get your children to come out of the clubs to spend time with the family! These highly themed kids-only spaces offer age-appropriate activities and kid-friendly spaces to explore and make new friends. The Disney characters have even been known to make special appearances in the kids' clubs.

The kids' clubs are complimentary for kids age 3-17. Kids age 3-12 can join in the fun in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lounge (there are separate areas for younger and older kids), while tweens age 11-14 are welcome in the Edge club, and teens age 14-17 have their own space in the Vibe club. The "It's a Small World Nursery" is available for children age six months – 3 years for a nominal fee.

Staterooms designed for families.
"Spacious" is a word not often used to describe cruise staterooms, but Disney has done an outstanding job of making use of every available inch of space… and they've made sure to keep the needs of families top of mind.

From split bathrooms that allow the sink and toilet to remain available even when someone else is in the shower, to more connecting staterooms and some rooms with small bathtubs, families will appreciate the conveniences a Disney cruise line stateroom offers.

Moms, in particular, will appreciate the fact that your stateroom attendant will visit and clean your room twice per day. In such a small space, you'll enjoy coming back from a day exploring one of the ports – or coming back from dinner and a show - to find your room neat and organized.

Stress-free dining.
Sure, all cruise lines include food… but Disney has added a few perks and conveniences that make a difference.
With character dining and unique dining experiences such as the Animator's Palate dining room that comes alive changing from black and white to full color during the course of your meal, your kids will enjoy mealtime as much as you do.

If you are traveling with little ones who may have a hard time sitting through a three course meal each night, don't worry… they've got you covered! Kids club counselors come to the dining room about midway through the late seating to pick up kids who want to head to the clubs and let Mom and Dad finish dinner in peace!

Families will also appreciate benefits such as complimentary soda and beverages available 24/7 and free room service. Most cruise lines require you to purchase a soda package or pay for drinks outside of the dining rooms, but Disney Cruise Line offers complimentary sodas from drink stations near the pool.

Stellar entertainment.
If there is one thing you know you can expect from Disney, it's outstanding entertainment, and Disney Cruise Line definitely does not disappoint!

You've probably heard about Disney's Broadway shows that are introducing a whole new generation to live theater, but did you know you can take in similar Broadway-caliber performances on your Disney Cruise?

Each evening the Walt Disney Theater will feature an impressive, family-friendly performance. Expect to be wowed by these hour-long productions. They are the perfect length to keep kids entertained without exceeding the limits of their attention span.

But the entertainment doesn't stop there… your cruise director and cast members have a lot more fun in store for you!

There are ticketed (but complimentary!) character meet and greets where you'll have the opportunity to meet groups of your favorite characters with a minimal wait and lots of time to spend interacting. Characters are often found wandering the ship and interacting with guests at random times as well.
And we can't forget the parties!
No one does a deck party quite like Disney!

These nighttime dance parties have themes like "Pirates IN the Caribbean" or the Frozen themed "Freezing the Night Away." You can interact and dance alongside some of your favorite characters or hang back and enjoy the themed food and drinks available at the party. The night ends with a spectacular fireworks display… an event that is unique to Disney Cruise Line.

Castaway Cay
One of the highlights of any Bahamian or Caribbean cruise with Disney Cruise Line is sure to be a day spent at their private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

Your Castaway Cay visit is likely to be everything you dream of when you think of an idyllic beach day in the Caribbean! With its soft white sand, crystal blue water, and relaxing atmosphere, you may never want to get back on the ship!

Castaway Cay is widely considered to be the top cruise line private island experience, and it's no surprise why. There are plenty of activities for the whole family  from snorkeling, swimming, biking, and more… or you can just relax in a hammock with a frozen beverage if that's more your style!

Since Disney owns the island, there is no need to bring your wallet… food and most activities are included in your cruise fare and any adult beverages, souvenirs or excursions can be charged to your stateroom account.

These are just a few of the reasons why a Disney Cruise is worth every penny. I could go on for hours explaining even more… and I'd be happy to talk with you about just that if your family is ready to start planning your cruise vacation!

Shouldn't Those Kids be in School?

You finally have that youngest child packed off to college or you managed to get the grandparents to watch the kids while you head off for an adult vacation.
The last thing you want to see are a bunch of little darlings running around. Of course someone will tell you to head for an adult only all inclusive resort, but maybe sitting on the beach is not what you have in mind for this trip. Viking River and Ocean Cruises are adult only and the hotly anticipated Virgin Voyages(the 1st ship Scarlet Lady will launch April 2020) will be AO also.

Problem is that  your kids' school schedule maybe the exception not the rule. So here is what you need to know.

1. Spring Break is a moveable feast: K-12 schools breaks can be from early March-mid April. Gone is the time when schools just broke around the 2 weeks surrounding Easter.

2. Not everyone is on the Labor Day to mid June school year. Depending on location, some schools start in August and finish up anywhere from mid May onward.

3. Jersey Week  No this is not some Disney/ESPN promotion to get people into the parks at a rather slow time of the year. It 's the week that New Jersey schools get Thursday & Friday off so the teachers can go to the union convention. Since it sometimes falls on election week, families do pull the kids out for the entire week. So resorts and cruise ships may seem a little fuller this week.

4. Fall Break- Some schools do have a week long fall break in October. The week Columbus Day falls in is popular.

5. President's Day week & Mardi Gras week- Yes, kids in certain areas of the country get these weeks off.

Keep these times in mind when planning your adult getaway!

Top 3 Tips For Walt Disney World with Teens

Late Extra Magic Hours at Hollywood Studios
photo ©Disney

For most people, the thought of a Walt Disney World® vacation conjures images of wandering the parks with little ones, but in many ways, your theme park vacation can be even more fun with teens and tweens. There is no need to stop mid-day for naps, they have no trouble staying out late for fireworks, and Mom and Dad can enjoy those thrill rides too since everyone meets the height requirements.

Here are our top 3 tips for your Walt Disney World vacation with teens and tweens:

Embrace their schedule…

One of the top recommendations I give my clients to avoid the long lines in the parks is to arrive early and get as much done in the first hour the park is open as you can. This plan works great with young kids who are often up at the crack of dawn anyway, but as any parent of teens knows, the older they get, the later they want to sleep! It’s setting your family up for frustration and arguments if you plan to be at the park gates before they open every morning, so take your teen’s advice and “chill out, Mom!”

Let the families with little kids enjoy their time at the morning extra magic hours and plan to enjoy time with your teens staying late at the parks at night. Evening extra magic hours mean that one of the theme parks will remain open for onsite resort guests a few hours past its regular closing time. The lines and crowds will thin out dramatically as the night wears on and is the perfect time to enjoy the parks with your older kids (Mom and Dad can grab some Starbucks to keep them from turning into a pumpkin at night!).

There is lots of fun to be had outside the theme parks…

While you'll spend much of your time in one of the four major theme parks, the fun doesn’t stop there.

Hanging out and relaxing at your hotel pool can be the perfect way to spend an afternoon (especially if you need a chance to recover after your late-night adventures at the theme parks). Give the kids some time to explore the resort, grab lunch on their own and meet you at the pool.

Looking for even more water-based fun? Take the time to check out one of Disney’s themed water parks. The kids will love the thrill rides and wave pools, and it’s the perfect opportunity for you to send them off on their own while you relax and enjoy some downtime (maybe even with an adult beverage or a good book).

Disney Springs is full of restaurants and activities that are sure to be a hit for an evening of family fun. You can plan on bowling at Splitsville or taking in a concert at the House of Blues and grab dinner at one of the food trucks or the T-Rex café and then enjoy some ice cream from Ghirardelli or cupcakes from Sprinkles as you spend the rest of your night wandering through the shops.

Plan some tours…

When you visit with young kids, it’s hard to plan for all of the fantastic tour options Disney has to offer, but they are just perfect to experience with your teens or tweens. What teenager wouldn’t enjoy zipping through the trails of Ft. Wilderness on a Segway or getting a peek backstage at how all the magic happens?

Want to really WOW your teens? Check out the options such as the Ultimate Day of Thrills VIP Tour or the Ultimate Nights of Adventure VIP Tour. If you’d like a more flexible VIP tour experience, we can even hook you up with a private VIP tour guide to spend the day with you!

Planning the perfect experience begins with scheduling your vacation consultation call. Tips For Safely Traveling Abroad

It seems that every time you watch the news, all you see is another wave of terrorist attacks and crises or natural disasters.  With everything going on, it is normal for people to become unsure whether they should go ahead with trips they have planned.  Disasters, both natural and man-made, can happen anywhere at any time.  It is impossible to know the risk of one destination over another.   The best advice I can give, which is also stated by the U.S. State Department, is to continue your travel plans and use these travel tips to help minimize the risks during your journey.

1.  Enroll in STEP
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a government initiative to keep Americans safe abroad.  This free service allows you to register with STEP to get travel alerts and warnings for a particular country, and will help the government assist you better in an emergency.

2. Scan Your Passport (And Other Important Items)
If something happens to your documents or other documents while you are out of the country, it could take up to 6 weeks for a new one to arrive.  Although you might already know to make a copy of your passport, consider downloading a scanning app to keep your important documents safe in the cloud.

3.  Use Social Media to Stay Updated
Twitter gives you breaking news and can provide a potentially life-saving information in an emergency.  You can follow the U.S embassy feed in the country you are visiting and the U.S. State Department's feed, @travelgov.  The @RedCross feed and Google's Crisis Response Team, @GoogleCR are also worth following.
I like to have client's emergency contacts, if there is an issue and my clients are more than welcome to give my contact information to that person also.  No need to call and check every day, but post updates to social media sites or send quick e-mails so that everyone knows you are safe and happy.

4.  Get Travel Insurance
Accidents can happen anywhere--and your insurance from back home may not cover you abroad.  Many low cost options to cover the unforeseen while you are abroad are available and well worth the cost. Read more here on why it's a good choice.

5.  Clear All Credit Card Hurdles
Before your trip, call your credit card and explain where you are going and for how long in order to avoid a freeze on your account.  In addition, find out exactly how much credit is left on your card so you don't exceed your limit.

6.  Focus On The Most Likely Risks
Wherever you are--including at home--you are far more likely to be a victim of ordinary street crime than terrorism.  So avoid flashy jewelry and other signs of wealth.  Even if you are starting to feel comfortable in a new city, DO NOT try and find a shortcut to lesson your travel time.  Download a travel guide to keep you on the straight and narrow.

Life Skills Learned Best From Travel

Every parent knows that children almost always learn best through experience. Time spent in the classroom is, of course, essential but getting out in the world can be even more educational.

Vacations not only give you a chance to relax and bond with your kids, but they also provide an opportunity for your children to learn valuable life skills and lessons that will serve them well for years to come. Exposing them to more world experiences will help them develop into a more well-rounded and compassionate adult.

Opportunities for growth and development can happen on any vacation. You don’t have to travel across the globe for those precious “teachable moments.” Learning opportunities can arise just as easily on a long weekend getaway close to home as they do on an international trip with unique cultural experiences.

Here are some of the top life lessons your children are likely to learn through travel…

Positive Attitude

It’s no surprise that the attitude you set out with can determine the success of your day, but when we are at home mired in the routine and frustrations of work and home life, it’s easy to “wake up on the wrong side of the bed.” When we are on vacation, we’re more relaxed and open to new experience. We’re more likely to find the humor in everyday situations and approach any unexpected challenges with a “glass half full” attitude.

Children learn from example no matter how old they are. Seeing their parents more relaxed and enjoying themselves encourages them to do the same. “Vacation Mom” is usually a lot more easy-going than “home Mom.”  And “Vacation Dad” is often easier to connect with than “routine Dad.”

Patience

From the line at security in the airport to waiting your turn in the line at the amusement park… or sitting patiently through the safety talk before hopping on the back of a Vespa to go zipping through the streets of Rome, travel requires patience. There’s no way around it.

Our children are used to instant gratification. Want to watch your favorite TV show? Between NetFlix and Hulu, I bet you can find multiple seasons available for your viewing pleasure at a moment’s notice. While they may not be very good at waiting at home, you’ll be surprised at how different things can be when they are outside of their typical environment!

Flexibility

Things don’t always go as planned and nowhere is that more evident than when you are away from home without all of your common resources at your fingertips! But sometimes the best and most memorable experiences are the ones we didn’t plan for.

I’ll never forget hearing from a family who had planned their trip to London and Paris with their older teen sons for two years only to have their 17-year-old break a bone in his foot stepping off of a curb “wrong.” They were on a guided tour with Adventures by Disney and were to spend the next day bicycling on the grounds of Versailles and, of course, he couldn’t participate

One of the guides spent the day with him in the gardens, and it turned out to be the most memorable day of his vacation. The guide became his “wingman” and spent the afternoon getting pretty French girls to pose for photos with him. Photos he thoroughly enjoyed sending to his buddies back home! He learned lots of French phrases and rather than an afternoon of boredom, he thoroughly enjoyed a day full of laughter.

Perspective

I love hearing about these lessons when my clients return from their travels! One of my favorite stories was hearing a mother say her kids had spent the first few days of vacation complaining about poor wifi signals and small hotel rooms. By the end of the trip, they’ve seen families in the Andes Mountains washing their clothes in a cold water stream, homes for large families with only a couple of rooms, kids who have never held an iPad or played Minecraft. My children were truly shocked when we got beyond the tourist zone in Western Mexico, it gave them an understanding why creating a life in the United States is a dream of people around the world. The gain a new appreciation for the conveniences they have the benefit of and the things that are truly important in life.

Appreciation of Diversity

It’s easy for our kids to assume that everyone looks, thinks, talks and acts just like they do. Through your families travels they will encounter kids who spend their afternoons playing the same playground games, but all while speaking another language. Or that the kid who has never held an iPad find the same goofy faces just as hysterical as they do.

They come to see that despite our differences, there are plenty of commonalities that bind us together. Opening their eyes to the beauty and benefits of diversity and different views will serve to make them more curious and adventurous. Don’t be surprised when they end up craving more of these new experiences!

Traveling with your kids is not always easy… especially the more significant, longer, more involved trips. But getting outside of your comfort zone and experiencing the world with your kids is one of the best gifts you can give them. Not only will they appreciate the memories and the connections made during time spent with you, but they will also be better equipped with qualities that make them well-rounded, compassionate, and resilient adults.

And after all, isn’t that every parent’s #1 goal for their kids?

Rhine River Cruise

Nothing is more stunning than sailing the Rhine Gorge from Rudesheim to Koblenz and being on the top deck of your river cruise. It's the best way to get these swoon worth pictures as the castles and villages are on both sides of the river and if you sit on your balcony you'll miss the ones on the other side. Sure we all know the one line who advertises a lot, but there are many other river cruise lines to consider. Working with a river cruise specialist like myself will ensure you find the cruise line that is right for you.
